Stigma's and Social Stereotyping

Stigma is a bad attribute of a particular thing I will be talking about the stigma that is racial stereo typing. The article “Hoodie Evolves into a Symbol of Protest” by Dahlen Glanton and Dawn Rhodes talks about the stigmas around wearing a hoodie. They talk about some who view wearing hoodies as a stigma of being “Ghetto”. They use the case of Trayvon Martin’s murder as the number one example. Some people have argued that he was only shot because he was wearing a hoodie which in turn made him look like a gangster. Growing up as a Filipino-American I was surrounded by many stigmas that caused people to think I was someone who I'm not. I have grown up hearing people’s views on Filipinos. Majority of people think of us as small brown third world island people who only go to school to become nurses and our women only marry white males to get a citizenship and a free ride. I everyone will tell you I look like almost any other Asian race except Filipino I am 6 feet tall with small eyes, a pointed nose and a lot of features that wouldn’t be considered a Filipino’s. My friends are almost all Filipino and not a single one of us look the same you might not even think any of us were Filipino because of how much people believe in stereotypes. I believe that what we look like or where we are from shouldn’t matter anymore because we are all Americans now. I am not saying that every person still thinks in this way because it has improved because our generation is becoming more and more diverse and people are now accepting one another as Americans and not by race.
